"As a criminal defense and civil rights attorney, I have seen up close how the current justice system makes underlying issues worse and how it perpetuates, instead of interrupts, cycles of harm. It fails everyone—victims of crime, our most vulnerable communities, and people of color. And it certainly does not make any of us safer. I am running for Bronx District Attorney to shift the focus of the office from prisons and punishment to prevention, treatment, and safety."
The people of the Bronx should feel safe and secure in their community. They should have a District Attorney that stands up for them and uses her power to advocate for them inside and outside of the courtroom. Tess will focus the efforts of the Bronx District Attorney on the things that actually keep us safe—like violence prevention programs and treating the underlying causes of crime so that cycles of harm are interrupted. Tess will also hold powerful people—like landlords, employers, and law enforcement officers—accountable when they cause harm. And she will work hard to turn around an office that has been unable to retain staff, comply with discovery laws, or secure the resources and programming that the Bronx deserves.
